Court remands Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, lawyer, 10 in Kuje prison following protest

The Magistrate Court in Kuje has remanded the brother of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, his legal counsel, and ten others following their arrest during a protest demanding the release of Kanu.
The suspects are to remain in custody until Friday, October 25. The group was arrested on Monday, October 20, for participating in a demonstration calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Reports indicate that the protest involved chanting and disrupting public movement, which led to police intervention.
Legal Counsel Confirms Custody Status
Aloy Ejimakor, Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, who was among those arrested, provided an update on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, October 21.
He wrote: “I am safe & sound but still under custody at Kuje prison. The Magistrate refused to listen to our submissions. He insisted on remanding us till Friday and got his way. For context: Keep in mind that they bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje.”
Court Charges: Inciting Disturbance and Breach of Peace
According to a court document shared by Professor Chidi Odinkalu, former National Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (HRCN), the suspects face charges including inciting disturbance and breach of public peace in defiance of a court order.
Authorities allege that the group obstructed citizens’ freedom of movement and disrupted traffic while chanting war songs during the protest.
The Magistrate Court has directed that the suspects remain in Kuje prison custody until Friday, October 25, when further hearings will determine the next legal steps.
Ejimakor and the others are expected to make their defense before the court at that time.
