First batch of Nigerians from Ukraine arrive Abuja (photos)

 

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has announced that the first batch of Nigerian evacuees from Ukraine has arrived in Abuja.

The commission made this disclosure on Friday, March 4, via her official Twitter handle. According to NIDCOM, the passengers, numbering about 450 from Romania, landed at the private jet terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by 7:10 am (WAT) via a Max Air flight this morning at about 7.10am.

They are mostly students who fled Ukraine to Romania following Russia’s invasion of the Eastern European country.

They were received by government officials and are expected to undergo documentation after which they will head home and self-isolate in line with the COVID-19 protocols.

In other news, popular Nigerian singer, Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, better known as Mr Eazi, has donated N5 million to African students stranded in Ukraine.

Popular Nigerian singer, Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, better known as Mr Eazi, has donated N5 million to African students stranded in Ukraine.

Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine thousands of Africans are believed to be trapped in Ukraine, unable to leave or find a safe place to stay until they can be safely evacuated.

Speaking to CNN Africa, Anjola-Oluwa Ero-Phillips, a Nigerian medical student in Ukraine, said he and around 70 other Nigerian students are stranded with no way to legally leave Lviv in the west of the country, close to the border with Poland.

The ‘oh my gawd’ crooner was moved by their predicament and donated 5 million naira to a crypto wallet set up by a humanitarian organization to provide them with food and travel arrangement.
